Barbadian squash players delivered two stunning upsets in the opening matches of the 24th Pan American Championships currently taking place in Cartagena, Colombia.
Meagan Best [9/16] rallied from losing the first game to knock out No. 1 seed Sabrina Sobhy of the United States in a match that went the distance.
Losing 4-11 to start, Best won the next two 11-9, 11-5, lost the fourth 2-11 and then held nerve to capture the final game 12-10.
The other Barbadians watching behind the glass erupted in cheers of jubilation.
Not to be outdone, Margot Prow, who is representing Barbados for the first time, upset [3/4] seed Nicole Bunyan 6-11, 11-2, 11-5, 11- in four games.
Canadian Bunyan is ranked 47th in the world.
The other upset featured Guyana’s [3/4] Nicolette Fernandes who went down 3-2 to Chile’s Giselle Delgado.
In the quarter-finals, Best is scheduled to play [5/8] Marina Stefanon and Bunyan will play another [5/8], Diana Garcia, of Mexico. (SAT)
