HAMILTON – Health authorities announced on Wednesday the first novel coronavirus (COVID-19) death in three months, a few hours after Governor Rena Lalgie confirmed that she had tested positive for the viral illness.
The latest fatality took Bermuda’s death toll from COVID-19 to 149.
But active cases have fallen to 35, with three people now in hospital and none in intensive care.
Bermuda’s previous deaths were reported on August 4, when four people lost their lives to the illness and medical staff were managing 196 confirmed cases.
The figures were from the 3 356 test results since October 18, in which 88 people were found positive for the coronavirus – while 117 people have recovered since the last update.
Late Wednesday, Government House announced that although Lalgie – Britain’s representative on the island – will work remotely, she will not attend events or meetings in person until she tests negative for the illness.
The notice added that Lalgie authorised Deputy Governor Tom Oppenheim to read on Friday the Throne Speech that will outline the government’s plans for the coming 12 months on her behalf.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Kim Wilson said t while the island’s positive cases were “quite low”, it was “most likely due to reduced COVID-19 testing”.
