BDF Sports Programme on ‘last legs’

The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme could be on its last legs with the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) unable to bankroll the developmental initiative this year.

BCA president Conde Riley told Weekend Sport his association was already owed by more than $25 million and could not afford to spend the more than $300 000 required to finance and maintain a cricket team over the next year.

“We are owed from May 1, $25 million by Kensington Development Corporation (KDC) and Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., (BTII), for the lease rental of Kensington Oval to them, and you can add another $3 million owed by Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the staging of various tournaments, so we don’t have that kind of slack to pick up $400 000 a year to keep the sports programme running.

“Remember those guys live up there and are paid a salary monthly and when Government withdrew its funding in 2019, we tried our best to keep it going for two years but we don’t have the wherewithal to do it,” he said.
