Barbados to get new stadium through grant from China

Barbados and China on Friday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide a new National Stadium.

The facility at Waterford, St Michael, will be constructed under grant funding, but no cost was given during the signing at Ilaro Court on Friday.

Minister of Sports Charles Griffith and Chinese ambassador to Barbados Yan Xiusheng signed the document that will make way for construction to start. Prime Minister Mia Mottley was also in attendance.

“We know that it is something that not only sportsmen but the country has been asking for an extended period of time, and we are very pleased that we are about to take that first step in terms of having our stadium,” Griffith said.

Representatives of the two countries met last week to discuss the issue, which was placed on the back burner during the COVID-19 pandemic. (Nation Sports)
