Bangladesh defeat hurts thousands of fans

Long Island set the perfect stage for the Bangladeshi bash that engulfed the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, but the Asian team was unable to maintain their 100 per cent record in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with yesterday’s narrow four-run defeat to South Africa.

Similar to Sunday’s all-Asian clash between Pakistan and India, thousands of cricket- loving Bangladesh fans arrived early in their green and with stuffed tigers and flags in hand.

An estimated 20 000 Tigers’ fans filled the western end of the stadium confident that their team would pull off a victory against the South Africans, who defeated Sri Lanka and Netherlands by six wickets and four wickets, respectively, in their first two encounters of the T20 World Cup here in New York.

The pitch, with its uneven and variable bounce was instrumental in Bangladesh restricting South Africa to just 113 for six from their alotted overs as the quick dismissals of openers Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs had the Proteas reeling at 23 for four, much to the amusement and entertainment of the vibrant Bangladesh crowd.
