Baker earns hosts 42nd medal

Amelie Baker brought a celebratory ending to Team Barbados’ participation at the 35th CARIFTA Aquatic Championships with a bronze medal performance in the Open Water five-kilometre race yesterday morning at Carlisle Bay.

The Open Water 5K was the final event on the Games’ schedule for this year and Baker’s third meant the hosts ended the competition with 42 medals.

Competing in the girls’ 16-18 division, Baker finished her five laps around the one-kilometre circuit in one hour, 15 minutes, 30 seconds, despite having to endure some rough waters in the later stages of the race on her way to the finish point.

Britta Schwengle of Aruba took the silver medal in 1:09:29 and Kyra Rabess of the Cayman Islands transported her successful form from the Wildey pool to the ocean, winning the gold medal in 1:09 flat, a little ahead of Schwengle.

In the boys’ division, Kimani Bellanger of Martinique took gold in 1:05:29, finishing more than two minutes ahead of Nikolai Blackman of Trinidad and Tobago. (NM)
