Atherley touts new governance model

Leader of the Alliance for Progress Party (APP) Bishop Joseph Atherley is promising a new model of governance if his party is victorious at the polls on January 19.

On Thursday, while supporting his colleague Maria Phillips, candidate for St Michael North, during her campaign, Atherley said this new model was based on transparency, which was lacking from previous governments over the years.

“We’re committing to a new model of governance and it will include a mechanism that would involve people’s participation. The people in Barbados, once they elect a government by marking an X against somebody name, are then distant from the process and have no direct influence on the process until the time of the next election. Now we want to set up what we call citizens panels,” he said.

“We want to give the citizens panels certain significant roles and responsibilities, one of which is this: every six months in the Parliament of Barbados, every minister of Government must come before its citizens’ panel to answer questions raised with respect to any issue in relation to his or her portfolio.” (SB)
