Some farmers who cultivate land in Gibbons Boggs, Christ Church, are appealing to the relevant authorities to revise the new water rate for those who benefit from subsidised water from the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC).
However, Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir is holding firm that come May 1, all farmers will be subject to a level playing field for water and pay $1.80 for each cubic metre (264 gallons) they use.
During the Financial Statement And Budgetary Proposals presented by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mia Amor Mottley in March, it was announced that a fixed water rate of $1.80 per cubic metre across the agricultural sector will be introduced effective May 1.
While this was considered as a big win for farmers who get water from the Barbados Water Authority at a commercial rate, it is being seen as a major setback for those receiving BADMC water.
