The Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) has been reaping success in “policing” the industry, but chairman Roy Raphael said they were desperately in need of funding to continue operations at their command centre.
“It costs us $1 000 a day to operate the command centre and we are doing a pretty good job,” Raphael said, pointing out that the Black Rock, St Michael office contained a hotline and a staff of four persons.
He revealed that AOPT was conducting its own investigations into the industry and was fielding complaints and suggestions from the travelling public.
“On average we get 15 to 20 calls a day but on weekends we get between 60 to 70 calls. It has been increasing. Most of the calls we get are from residents complaining that operators are driving through their district or they see buses overloading or operators not wearing their masks.” (MB)
