Another closure at LT Gay

Some parents of students of Lawrence T Gay Memorial School were left fuming at the gates on Monday after it was closed once again.

One such parent, Corey Sealy, had to leave work and return for his son.

“I’m getting tired of this, you send school your children and before the morning out, you getting call to come back for them. I didn’t hear anything today though and you can’t be putting out children without contacting the parents first. It’s only lucky my mother lives nearby and he went to her,” he said.

The school closed last Tuesday, the latest in a series of closures due to a yet unidentified environmental issue.

There were reduced classes on Wednesday before mid-term break on Thursday and Friday. Information was then circulated to parents and guardians the school would not reopen yesterday but not everyone received the information.

Barbados Union of Teachers president Rudy Lovell said the situation was “unfortunate” and called on the Ministry of improve its communication. He said there was a meeting on Friday and he was appreciative of the ministry’s efforts to find a solution but the fact parents were turning up at the school when it was closed meant there was a void in the message delivery.

He said the school would reopen on Wednesday and there were plans to yet again relocate the affected blocks. (CA)
