Amani Mascoll-Beckles was crowned the Under-20 boys’ double sprint champion after producing an impressive display to win the 200 metres in the May Classic on Sunday at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.
The 18-year-old Extreme Velocity athlete and CARIFTA Games finalist clocked 21.69 seconds to complete a remarkable double and become the closest competitor to the Junior Pan American Games standard of 21.25 seconds.
Multiple CARIFTA Games medallist Aren Spencer, who will represent Barbados in the triple jump, had a lightning start out of the blocks and led going into the home stretch.
Spencer faded midway through the final straight and Mascoll-Beckles gathered enough momentum off the bend and through the final phase to storm across the finish line and win gold ahead of Talons sprinter Xavier Ifill, whose time was 21.98 secs.
