AG: It’s up to gunmen

If gunmen want to surrender their weapons to the police, Attorney General Dale Marshall says he would gladly put an arrangement in place for them to do so.

Responding to concerns from the public who questioned the validity of a recent “peace treaty” between warring groups, since guns have not been turned in, Marshall stated that the giving-up of any weapons would be up to the groups.

“The matter of turning in guns, that is a matter for them. This peace treaty does not have any involvement by the Government so, therefore, there is no opportunity for me to say and ‘therefore, you must turn in your guns’.

“We have had gun amnesties before and the response was not really encouraging. But if I have to put an arrangement in place which would facilitate people bringing in their guns without any recriminations, I am more than happy to do that. But I think people are adding on to what these young men have determined to do what they want to see; but I can’t impose any such thing on them. That is their initiative.” (MB)
