Activists: Shut down the GIS

A number of non-governmental organisations are calling for the Government Industrial School (GIS) to be abandoned and a reformative juvenile justice system in Barbados.

Yesterday, close to 30 members of at least ten organisations made a stand against child abuse by participating in the Prayer Walk For The Nation’s Youth.

Director of the Omololu The Children’s Foundation and coordinator of the Global Network for Cultural Development, Tempu Nefertari, said child abuse was a systemic problem in Barbados and more should be done to address it.

She said the walk was to send a strong message to Government regarding current developments at the GIS, particularly the girls’ section at Barrows, St Lucy. (SB)
