CTUSAB appeals for closer monitoring of work permits

General Secretary of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), Dennis de Peiza appealed for closer monitoring of the issuance of work permits.

De Peiza highlighted the issuance of work permits for non-nationals “where no suitably qualified Barbadian is immediate available”.

“CTUSAB deplores any attempt on the part of employers to circumvent established government policy with respect to the issuing of work permits for the employment of non-nationals,” he said in a media statement.

“In an effort to ensure that the policy is not circumvented, CTUSAB calls for the establishment of a body to rigorously investigate all applications for work permits, other than having the completion of this process, rest in the sole discretion of the Minister of Immigration.”

De Peiza said government must continue to assiduously monitor all applications for work permits and ensure that the conditions upon which work permits are granted are being honoured.
