The Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) is worried that cemeteries have now become dumping grounds in Barbados.
Yesterday, during a press conference at Christ Church cemetery in Church Hill, Christ Church, public relations officer of the SSA, Carl “Alf” Padmore, revealed the new trend had seen people dumping old refrigerators, stoves and other types of waste at these facilities and warned culprits that they could face legal action.
“The SSA continues to be concerned about the abuse of its property, in this case as it relates to cemeteries. There are a number of cemeteries that we manage day-to-day. The ones that fall directly under our purview are Bush Park, St Philip; here, St James Cemetery, Holetown, St James; Westbury, St Michael and St Peter’s Cemetery, Little Battaleys, St Peter. People are leaving where they live and bringing home appliances here,” he said.
“The skip here is for the purpose of dumping cemetery waste after maintaining the property. But people are bringing stoves. Sometimes we see tyres and different things here.
