48 Covid cases as Explorer of the Seas docks

Barbados will continue to give any needed support to cruise ships which come into the Bridgetown Port with positive COVID-19 cases.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport Senator Lisa Cummins made this clear following reports of 48 positive cases among passengers and crew aboard the cruise ship Explorer of the Seas, which docked here Friday after it had been denied entry to the port in St Lucia.

Barbados had also been on the ship’s original itinerary.

Cummins explained that Barbados’ position was based on the fact that cruise lines had implemented measures to provide onboard facilities to handle positive COVID-19 cases.

“If you look at a ship now, most of these ships have sophisticated isolation facilities – ICU beds, ventilator capacity, a full onboard medical team and they have the capacity to treat any persons onboard a ship that don’t necessarily need urgent care and even in those instances they may have that capacity. . .” (GC)
