Tutor on financial crimes charges

A 28-year-old tutor appeared in the District “B” Magistrate’s Court in the Eric Holder Jr Municipal Complex, St Joseph yesterday, charged with two financial crimes.

Regina Michelle Hunte, of Garden Land, Country Road, St Michael, is charged that on January 11 this year, without the permission of the Exchange Control Authority she attempted to export BDS$10 450 in notes, from Barbados to Canada. Hunte’s second charge is that she engaged in money laundering, where she was in possession of the money on that same date, which was the proceeds of crime.

Hunte was reportedly intercepted by police as she was about to take a flight to Canada.

The accused was not required to plead to the indictable matters before Acting Magistrate Carolyn Ward-Sargeant, who granted her $7 500 bail and adjourned the case until May 21.

Hunte is being represented by attorney Safiya Moore.
