More than 37 years ago, Desmond Haynes, the current lead selector for West Indies, became the first Barbadian batsman to score a One-Day International hundred on home soil.
Haynes made 116 in a Windies total of 265 for three in a rain-reduced 49 overs, and the Caribbean side, under the leadership of Vivian Richards, restricted New Zealand to 153 for eight in their 49 overs to win by 112 runs.
Yesterday, Kyle Mayers followed in the footsteps of the most famous son of his local club, Carlton, and became the second Barbadian to hit an ODI hundred on familiar ground.
But modern day West Indies did not have the same success against the New Zealanders, the current World No. 1, and they disappointed a crowd of more than 5 000, tumbling to a five-wicket defeat in the decisive third and final ODI of the series. (AR)
