The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued both a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Flash Flood Watch for the northern districts of the island.
Northern Barbados is expected to experience moderate to heavy showers throughout the afternoon, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms. Residents in these areas are being warned of possible lightning strikes, which could lead to power outages and pose life-threatening risks.
Shortly after, at 1:33 P.M., a Flash Flood Watch was also issued for the northern districts. This watch indicates that flash flooding may occur due to runoff from higher elevations, which could lead to soil erosion, water settling on roads, and debris flow.
Residents should be particularly cautious while travelling, as roadways may become impassable in some areas. Water accumulation and debris could cause delays or hazardous conditions for motorists, especially on routes in hilly or coastal areas.
The public is advised to remain indoors during lightning activity and to monitor updates from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) through their social media channels and websites.
Both watches will be terminated at 6:00 PM or sooner if warranted.
