Seaweed in the Careenage

Sargassum seaweed is once again invading the shores of Barbados.

Typically, it is concentrated on the eastern and southern sides of the island, but passers-by and catamaran operators were surprised to see it reaching the Inner Basin of the Careenage last Friday.

One catamaran operator in Bridgetown said he had never seen that amount and not that far inland, but there was nothing he could do and business would continue.

Sargassum seaweed has been coming to Barbados for several years now and it continues to be a nuisance for sea bathers, but others are exploring ways to make it commercially viable. (SAT)
