The Barbados Police Service has broken the silence on a multi-million dollar drug bust here last week.
Public Affairs and Communications Officer, acting inspector Rodney Inniss, confirmed the incident occurred on August 2.
“The Police Drug Squad carried out an operation involving the execution of a search warrant at an establishment. That search resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of illegal drugs, namely cannabis. A male suspect was taken into custody as a result of that find.”
News of the bust, 481kgs with an estimated value of Barbadian $21.2 million, was released by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) with an accompanying photograph.
Members of the public queried why there was no information from local lawmen, but Inniss said in the release that “investigations are at a very sensitive stage and are ongoing”.
A Colombian national was also arrested during the operation.
TTPS said it started in June 2020 and continued with surveillance and intelligence gathering until “a person of interest who was suspected of controlling a drug ring based in Central Trinidad with regional and international links” and “another man then boarded a flight to Barbados in late June 2022, Barbados law enforcement was notified, and their assistance was requested”.
The cannabis has an estimated value of TT $72 063 420. (PR/SAT)
