Pharmaceutical warning

Pharmaceutical distributors and retailers are being put on notice that unless they voluntarily work out systems to bring the price of medication down, Government may enforce price controls.

This position was made clear by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who said access to healthcare and medication should not just be accessible to those who have the financial means.

Mottley, who was delivering the featured remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony for a new urgent care facility at the Bayview Hospital yesterday, explained that some of the mark-ups on pharmaceutical supplies and services were prohibitively high.

She urged medical suppliers to follow the recent example of the food retailers and distributors, who took the decision to cap their profits between 12 to 15 per cent on 44 items, to help stem the rising cost of living.
