Peak of 500 dengue cases

There was a peak of 500 dengue cases in January, following an outbreak in October.

During that period, there were two deaths associated with the viral illness.

This was revealed on Thursday when Minister of Health, The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott, and other health officials were in the Well of the House of Assembly as the Estimates Debate continued.

Senior Medical Officer, Dr Leslie Rollock said that from testing, it was determined there were two types of dengue viruses circulating, and when there were multiple sub-types, it was more likely the disease would be severe.

“In order to stop the outbreak, we have to kill off the adult mosquitoes that contain the viruses and to do that, we need to fog,” she told the House.
