School will resume as normal at Belmont Primary, even as officials in the Ministry of Education Technological and Vocational Training (METVT) prepare to meet with teachers there at 9 a.m. today.
In a media release on Monday night, the Ministry said it was made aware of a shooting incident near the compound which damaged the gate. Arrangements were put in place for it to be fixed and that work should be completed today as well.
Education officials are also assuring parents that children will be adequately supervised during the meeting. School closed early on Monday after concerns were raised about security and 15 of the 18 teachers indicated they were unwell and left the compound.
Debris from a shooting incident at nearby Odessa McClean Drive was found on the plant in addition to the damaged gate, and president of the Parent-Teacher Association, Kimberley Kimberley Haynes, as well as president of the Barbados Union of Teachers, Rudy Lovell, were among those calling for better security.
Chief Education Officer, Dr Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, and other Ministry officials toured the school at 11:15 a.m. and engaged the principal in discussion about the concerns of the teachers which resulted in today’s meeting. (Nation News/PR)
