Night Nurse heals bruises

By Ezra Stuart in Grenada

Barbados had their own night nurse at the 51st CARIFTA Games yesterday at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium here in St George’s.

The Alleyne School’s 15-year-old sprint princess Aniya Nurse saved Barbados’ blushes somewhat with a bronze medal on an otherwise barren opening day but she couldn’t bandage all the bruises suffered on the track throughout a tough day.

Nurse sped to a lifetime best 11.76 seconds in the Under-17 Girls’ final to gain her first individual CARIFTA medal and the only one so far in a disappointing showing by Barbados.

But Guyana’s Athaleyha Hinckson triumphed in 11.44 seconds from Jamaica’s Adora Campbell (11.52) to ensure her country continues its golden run with a third gold medal.

“It feels really good to win a bronze medal tonight, especially coming back from last year, making the final and placing sixth. So this year the goal was to really come back and medal and PB (personal best),” said Nurse, who hails from Canefield in St Thomas. (EZS)
