The Barbados Senate now has its full slate of 21 senators. This morning, President The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason swore-in Dr Chelston Brathwaite and Dr Kristina Hinds at State House, filling the two vacant seats.
Immediately after the swearing-in, both Hinds and Brathwaite made it clear that they intend to be independent.
“I see myself fitting into the role of a Senator first, who brings constructive analysis of challenges, who can identify opportunities and who can promote the development of Barbados. In my role, I hope to bring almost 50 years of experience in management, in agriculture, in food security and in diplomacy,” said Brathwaite.
Hinds was a little more direct, stating: “I am an independent Senator. To my understanding, what we call Opposition Senators are Senators appointed by the Opposition Leader, but in the absence of such the president appoints, so I am definitely independent.” (CLM)
