Barbados has a new Chief Justice. He is Leslie Francis Haynes, SC.
Chief Justice Haynes was sworn in on May 17, 2024 as the 6th Chief Justice of post-Independent Barbados by Her Excellency The President of Barbados, The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, FB, GCMG, D.A., SC., LLD, at State House.
Mr. Haynes has over 44 years of experience as a legal practitioner. He attended The University of the West Indies and earned his Legal Education Certificate of the Council of Legal Education in 1980. He was admitted to the Bar of Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago in October 1980 and throughout the years, in several islands of the Eastern Caribbean. He was admitted to the Inner Bar in 2001.
Three Justices will also be appointed to the Office of the Justice of Appeal in the Supreme Court. Madam Justice Jacqueline Cornelius Thorne and Mr. Justice William Chandler are expected to take up office on June 1, 2024, while Madam Justice Victoria Charles-Clarke will do so on July 1, 2024.
There will also be an appointment of Judge of the High Court. Mr. Bryan Weekes will assume that office on July 1, 2024.
Along with the Chief Justice, this brings the complement of Court of Appeal Judges to six and High Court judges to 16. (Cabinet Office)
