Ministry resuming roadworks up north

The Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources (MTWW) is pushing to make headway on its road works projects in St Lucy and St Peter.

Work had started at Maycocks and Pie Corner, both in St Lucy, and Date Tree Hill, St Peter, but later stopped, which MTWW blamed on mechanical issues.

When the Weekend Nation team visited the areas on Wednesday, some of the residents said while they were pleased their areas had the attention of the authorities, they wanted the work completed.

One Maycocks resident, who did not want to be identified, said: “It’s great that they finally plan to do something about the condition of the road and the bush out here because it was like that for a while. Once it is done properly, I am good with that.”

Last month, some residents said they were concerned about the condition of the road. In response, Member of Parliament for St Lucy, Peter Philips, said although the matter had to be addressed this year, Maycock’s Road had been listed by Government as a priority and had been submitted for repairs.

“There are many factors to consider, such as resources and the dangers due to proximity to the former Arawak Cement Plant,” he said.

At Date Tree Hill, a resident, who gave his name only as James, said he was happy progress was being made.

“After the bridge fall apart, out here was in a worse state, but I would say they have made some headway, which we [are] glad about. We just hope it keeps heading in that direction,” he said.

In an update, MTWW said: “The Chance Hall Depot will continue its debushing programme in Maycocks, St Lucy from early next week. Mechanical issues delayed the start of the work this week.”

The ministry added: “Work has recommenced on the Pie Corner Bridge, St Lucy, where preparations are being made for the steel work. Work on repairs to Date Tree Hill, also in St Lucy, continues, where one half of the road has already been completed.”
