West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews produced another player of the match performance earlier today to help her side Welsh Fire Women register a comfortable nine-wicket win over Southern Brave Women at the Utilita Bowl.
Southern Brave Women were sent into bat first and limped to 103 from their allotted 100 deliveries. Welsh Fire responded with a clinical performance with the bat, scoring 106-1 with 26 balls to spare.
The Barbadian allrounder opened the bowling and delivered figures of 4-14 with her offbreaks, capturing the key wickets of England white ball openers Danni Wyatt and Maia Bouchier.
With an underpar score on the board, Fire captain Tammy Beaumont scored a belligerent 59 not out from 40 balls which included ten boundaries. She was accompanied by Matthews who batted in her slipstream to record an unbeaten knock of 35 runs and secured top spot in the table as things stand.
Speaking after the match, Matthews said “I think we’ve been really good. When you look at our line-up, we’ve got a lot of experience, and we’ve played on that really well. The bowlers have done a really good job at making sure we don’t have to chase too big of a total. I think it’s been a complete team performance and that’s where we’ve performed really well, everyone’s been chipping in and playing their role.”
This result and margin of victory mean the Fire automatically progressed to The Hundred’s Final on Sunday at Lord’s due to the significant boost to their net run rate.
