Barbadian racer Zane Maloney finished in a satisfactory fifth place at the end of a largely uneventful sprint race in the fifth round of the 2023 FIA F2 Championship at the Circuit de Monte Carlo in Monaco yesterday.
Maloney, who won on his previous competitive visit to Monaco two years ago during the 2021 Formula Regional Championship, continued his good form on the track by finishing fifth-fastest in Friday’s dual-group qualifying session.
As a result of the reversed order used to determine grid placings for the sprint, the teenager began sixth on yesterday’s grid but on a track where it is notoriously difficult to overtake, he was not able to push himself into another podium finish in the principality.
Current championship leader Ayumu Iwasa secured his second sprint race victory of the season by six seconds over his closest rival Indian driver Jehan Daruvala despite two safety car restarts in the race. (NM)
