Formula 2 racer Zane Maloney’s hopes of ending the 2023 FIA Formula 2 season on a high note hit a snag as he sadly crashed out in the final lap of Sunday’s season-ending feature race at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
As a result of another scoreless weekend, Maloney’s overall points tally of 96 and position of 10th in the driver’s standings stayed unchanged after the 13th and final round of a season with many highs and lows.
Maloney found good pace and was engrossed in a thrilling battle for the top places after starting fourth on the grid but on entering the final lap, Danish driver Frederik Vesti, who finished the season as vice champion, drew to within DRS range of Maloney in the fight for third.
The Barbadian driver resorted to defensive tactics but both drivers went too wide and their wheels made contact. Vesti was able to continue, but Maloney was sent spinning. He was later officially classified as finishing 17th since he completed over 90 per cent of the race. (NM)
