Police are calling for laws that will allow them to destroy impounded vehicles and boats.
Public relations officer, acting Inspector Rodney Inniss, made the appeal yesterday after the destruction of more than 100 firearms at Central Police Station, The City.
“Where we have vehicles that are not roadworthy or insured and similarly motorcycles which have been creating havoc in various communities, and even boats which have been seized, we would love to see, once those matters have been adjudicated, that we can dispose of them so they don’t end up back in the arms of offenders,” he told the media.
Inniss said that currently, seized vehicles are still the property of the accused and have to eventually be returned to them. In cases where they were badly damaged, they were sold at auction to someone who might say they want to use them for parts but instead make superficial repairs and put them back on the road. (CA)
