Mahalia’s unforgettable Christmas

You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear voices singing, let’s be jolly, deck the halls with boughs of holly.

True to form the hundreds that packed The Trident Grand Ballroom at the Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle All Inclusive Resort for the CIBC Mahalia Christmas Party left with treasured sentimental feelings on Sunday night.

It was the tenth anniversary of the event and Mahalia – backed by the exceptional and talented musicians who go by the name 2 Mile Hill of which she is front vocalist – could not contain her excitement at the public’s response as she acknowledged the sponsors and proclaimed the “show sold out”.

It was clear that Mahalia and 2 Mile Hill had cemented a loyal following over the years based on the reaction from the audience to the stage – for example, when they were affected by the lighting making it difficult to see the band or performers. The stage was also positioned in the centre. This occasionally disconnected the patrons from the singers whose stage craft had to be spot on.

Not to lose their audience they had to make their way around the band. This did not daunt the crowd however.

The event, which also featured an open mic session, offered such a high standard of vocals and musicianship any discomfort was soon forgotten. Fans just wanted it to be an unforgettable evening. They got it as Mahalia and 2 Mile Hill rendered their Christmas originals including Together This Christmas – beautifully enhanced with the whistling skills of Alex Cage and Joy written by Mahalia and Michael Mikey Mercer along with the season’s traditional hits. Mercer also performed Heart Of The Party and Feting Family.

Mahalia’s Xmas party exuded lots of flair. There is a certain je ne sais quoi that holds the attention of the uninitiated.

The cast of the Open Mic included singers Kiara, Larix, Kashida, Krisire teaming up with Nikita, Iana-Adu and Raphael Saul and among others. This session played an integral role in capping off a great night but Saul was exceptional as he transfixed the audience with the music of the season.

Saul said in his bio that he has a passion for music. He certainly left an indelible mark on the audience as he wowed them with his infectious personality and stage presence.
