Former member of Parliament Hamilton Lashley wants Barbados to become the mecca of horse racing in the Caribbean and he says it is within the hands of the Barbados Turf Club (BTC) and the government to ensure the sport of kings does not die a slow death.
The former Member of Parliament for St Michael South East spoke with Weekend Sport about the tremendous opportunity the country has to capitalise on a sport with such a rich history and added that he believed it was a massive oversight on the part of all involved.
“Right now and for the last seven years, our leading sports industry is that of horse racing. It employs so many different sectors of people from trainers, groomers, veterinarians and feed producers just to name a few. There are also different sectors on race day that work to maintain the product of horse racing. Therefore, over the years, this major sports institution in Barbados has been serving us well.”
Lashley also shared what he envisaged for Barbados horse racing in terms of bolstering its commercial appeal.
