Rachan Jackson Thomas, who went on a burglary and robbery spree with two cohorts, was described as being part of a “pack of predators” and a “pack of prairie hyenas” who beat and robbed homeowners with guns, cutlasses and pieces of metal.
And while Justice Carlisle Greaves stated he was loath to impose a final term of three years in prison, with a starting point of 12 years, he said that would be Thomas’ sentence given that the man had already spent five years on remand.
“I have a serious problem with three years,” the judge noted yesterday, “but I have to take into consideration you’ve been in jail for a long time and the judicial system can’t eat its cake and have it too.
“So when I tell you three more years, that wouldn’t have the same impact as if you had been sentenced at the time and you had been given 12 years on each count.” (HLE)
