It’s good night Nurse

Superintendent of Prisons, Lt Colonel John Nurse is leaving the prison service.

Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams has confirmed that the man who was in charge of the penal institution for 22 years had recently notified officials that he was retiring.

Abrahams told the Weekend Nation: “I can confirm that the Colonel has written to the MPS (Ministry of Public Service) indicating his intention to retire.”

He added that Nurse was currently on pre-retirement leave.

While the minister said he was not sure of the effective date of the retirement he added: “I will issue a full statement on this at the appropriate time.”

Nurse’s retirement comes at a time when the findings of a departmental enquiry into the operations of Dodds Prisons has never been revealed. It was started around the same time as the enquiry into the Government Industrial School of which the results were publicised several months ago. (MB)
