Basseterre – A flattering spell from Akeal Hosein topped an equally destructive spell from fellow West Indies international Alzarri Joseph and set the stage for Trinbago Knight Riders to start their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign with a tense three-wicket win over last year’s runners-up, St Lucia Kings on Wednesday in St Kitts.
Hosein grabbed 4-13 from his allotted four overs with his left-arm spin and Knight Riders restricted the Kings to 143 for nine in their allocation of 20 overs after sending the St Lucia franchise in to bat in the first match of a triple header at Warner Park.
Compatriot Tion Webster followed up with the top score of 58 from 45 balls that included six fours and three sixes to lead a successful run chase for TKR with four balls remaining in the face of an incisive spell of 4-17 from four overs for Joseph.
In the second men’s match of the day, Barbados Royals meet home team St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at 7 p.m. at the same venue, where TKR Women will play Guyana Amazon Women in the Women’s CPL starting at 3 p.m.
Summarised scores:
KINGS 143 for nine off 20 overs (Roshon Primus 38, Mark Deyal 35, Roston Chase 19, Leroy Lugg 13, Ackeem Auguste 11; Akeal Hosein 4-13, Jayden Seales 2-38).
TKR 148 for seven off 19.2 overs (Tion Webster 58, Tim Seifert 34, Kieron Pollard 17; Alzarri Joseph 4-17).
