Digicel hikes due to ‘rising business costs’

Some Digicel customers in Barbados have had to pay higher prices for some services this year, as the telecommunications company faces what management called “substantial increases in the cost of doing business”.

However, Digicel Barbados Limited chief executive officer (CEO) Natalie Abrahams said that “over the last three years, Digicel customers across the region have seen a 50 per cent reduction in the effective price of data and voice”.

Digicel has also increased some prices this year, including for the Digicel+ home entertainment service. The change took effect on August 1, and the company attributed it to “challenges posed by substantial increases in the costs of doing business”.

Abrahams said: “We understand that price adjustments can raise questions and concerns among our valued customers, as occurred earlier this year. Like every other company across the globe, we are dealing with the impact of substantial increases in the cost of doing business, with prices for goods, materials, utilities and labour going up significantly.

“We recognise that our services are only as good as the money we invest in them and due to those global increases and local impacts, periodically we are forced to take action to ensure that our delivery matches what our customers expect and deserve.”

Digicel competitor Flow recently notified some customers that the cost of some their post-paid mobile services increased effective November 1. (SC)
