A lowering of taxes is at the top of labour’s wish list ahead of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s Budget which is slated to be delivered on Monday.
In fact, general secretary of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), Dennis De Peiza, said workers have been buckling under the yoke of taxation for the last five years.
De Peiza said even though Government granted two salary increases since coming to power in 2018, those have “long been negated” by the increased burden.
“We must address the issue of taxation. Yes, the country must function on taxation, but the excessive taxation which has been featured over the last five years cannot continue. It is having a serious impact on how we do business because clearly if you look around you will see that a lot of businesses have closed their doors and that has serious implications for employment and the retention of labour. So, this is a serious problem,” De Peiza said. (CLM)
