Competitive cycling in Barbados needs a boost of youth that would fortify the sport for years to come.
That is the view of race manager of the Barbados Cycling Union (BCU) Adrian Sealy, as he outlined the governing body’s plans for competitions this year.
Cycling fared better than most of the other sports in 2021 as they were able to host a couple of events, including the National Road Cycling Championships in September. With their hopes pinned on more of the same in 2022, Sealy’s serious desire is to see a greater number of junior riders competing.
“With the coming of 2022, what we want to focus on is getting more youth and younger persons interested in cycling. We want to get our Youth Development Programme under way and pursue it more aggressively,” Sealy told NATION SPORT.
“That was the plan for 2021 but it did not really come to fruition because we could not do as much. This year, hopefully things will improve that we can get the programme going because that is the only way forward.” (NM)
