FIDE Master Philip Corbin will make a sentimental return to the Barbados national chess team in the upcoming inaugural 2024 CARICOM Classic.
Hosted by the Guyana Chess Federation from Sunday to March 10 at the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel, the tournament celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) with a coming together of the region’s top players to foster cultural exchange and intellectual excellence.
The special occasion awaits Corbin, who first donned national colours in 1975, 49 years ago, when he played board one at the Caribbean Chess Championships in Georgetown.
The 66-year-old chess veteran will be joined by a teammate 40 years his junior in Emar Edwards as the pair forms Barbados’ men’s component of the nine-round Swiss team tournament which also includes two women candidate masters in women’s national champion Katrina Blackman and Hannah Wilson to complete the four-member team which leaves on Sunday.
