Centenarian ‘a virtuous woman’

Mona Hackett stood up and danced yesterday in celebration of her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and well-wishers.

The mother of nine, five boys and four girls, was saluted during a service at Guiding Light Tabernacle, Fairfield Cross Road, Tudor Bridge, St Michael.

Her last child, Madonna Hackett-Hendricks, in a speech dedicated to “Mother Hackett” as she is fondly called, described Barbados’ latest centenarian as a virtuous woman who took care of the neighbourhood children, without pay, raising them as she did her own.

“You are truly without a doubt that virtuous woman. You are that woman who stretched forth your hands to the fore. Your children are raised up and called you blessed. You possess a smile that is genuine. Mum, we admire your sacrifice, love and dedication to us. Many days you went hungry so that we could eat,” she recalled. (RA)
