Barbadians Are being called to join the HIV/AIDS Commission in its efforts to get sex workers off the streets and enter more mainstream employment.
The appeal came yesterday from change specialist Cecilia Neblett-Brathwaite during a meeting with sex workers who are a part of Anonymous Hope (formerly called the Women’s Empowerment Movement).
“We want to make sure we provide outlets for these ladies to move on to the next step. We recognise there is discrimination regarding sex work, but we want Barbadians to see this as any other group looking to change.
“We want the public to come on board and assist us in our efforts so that we can move these ladies from one part of their lives to the next, because they are interested in working, in full-time employment, in education and developing their children,” Neblett-Brathwaite said at the commission’s Warrens, St Michael office.
She said that so far they have been able to enrol people in training for housekeeping and were hoping to get others into barbering, tailoring, culinary arts and other vocations. They also provide condoms and other resources. (TG)
