Barbadians questioning the need for water prohibition after the recent rainfall are being warned that the dry spell could worsen.
Water resource and environment manager at the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), Alex Ifill, said recent rainfall was not enough to impact the groundwater at the lower levels.
Ifill said predictions from the North Atlantic Oceanic Administration pointed to a 60 per cent chance of El Nino between May to June this year.
“Now these are percentage probabilities and it does not mean that it will come, but El Nino is usually associated with low rainfall and high temperatures as well as increased wind speeds. All of these factors reduce available rainfall and therefore, we use those parameters in our monitoring because there is a high likelihood that we could go into a hydro-geological drought that impacts the water resources and have also have socio-economic impacts,” Ifill said.
He made the remarks during a press tour of the Bowmanston pumping station in St John on Wednesday. (Nation News)
