BUT: Build new St John school

President of the Barbados Union of Teachers’ (BUT) Rudy Lovell has renewed calls for the Government to construct a new plant to house St John Primary School.

Lovell said the union was concerned that even though, in recent times, the Ministry of Education committed resources for remedial work on the Glebe, St John century-old facility, it continues to be plagued with environmental issues, allegedly causing students and teachers to fall ill.

“I think it is not in the best interest of the Government of Barbados to continue to spend money on an issue that is recurring unless the remedial work isn’t being done according to what is recommended. But if the remedial work is being done according to specifications and the issue keeps coming back it is time to really look for an alternative, look for a new school plant.

“If we are having the same problems every time work is done, it suggests to me and to the union that the problem is beyond remediation and we may need to look for an alternative location for the school,” Lovell told the DAILY NATION.
