The renaming of the Fairchild Street Bus terminal in honour of late Spiritual Baptist leader Granville Williams, is an attempt by the Government “to redress some of the imbalances in the presentation and the interpretation of the value of our heritage, to reflect on our true diversity”.
Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradsha said Barbados has a UNESCO World Heritage designation, “but it is hard to find visible evidence of the contribution of the enslaved people or of their descendants”.
“We moved Lord Nelson, and I am told that there is a competition ongoing to allow Barbadians to determine what would be put in its place. The renaming of the bus terminal is part of this move to address the imbalance and to put in place more symbols representative of our shared heritage. This would include interpretative signs that speak to why certain streets and buildings are important to our story and to highlight the significant contributors to our national identity and development,” she said.
The renaming was the fulfilment of a promise by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley made at the removal of the statue of Lord Nelson in 2019. (Nation News)
