Barbados Pride captain Kraigg Brathwaite hit a record-breaking, third first-class double hundred to give his side a healthy first innings lead, but Jamaica Scorpions defied the bowling attack of the hosts and reached 54 for one in their second innings in the West Indies Championship on Thursday.
Brathwaite hit 18 fours in 276 from 407 balls in 10 hours at the crease and anchored Pride to 521 for eight declared for a first innings lead of 193 on the third day of the second round match at Kensington Oval.
The 29-year-old opener’s innings became his highest first-class score, the highest all-time by a Barbadian batsman against a Jamaican side in a West Indies first-class match, and the seventh highest at the iconic ground in the capital of Bridgetown.
Raymon Reifer supported with 71, Jonathan Carter made 68, Shane Dowrich added 26, and left-arm spinner Patrick Harty was the most sucessful Scorpions bowler with 5-111 from 35 overs before Pride declared about an hour before the scheduled close in an attempt to press for their second successive win this season.
At stumps, Jermaine Blackwood was not out on 24 and Scorpions captain John Campbell, a century-maker in the first innings, was not out on 15, after left-arm pacer Reifer got opener Leroy Lugg caught at backward point for 10 in his fourth over.
Starting the day on 243 for two, Pride lost Reifer in the first hour when he was lbw to off-spinner Jamie Merchant, playing back and across.
The left-hander batted almost 3 1/2 hours, faced 162 balls, and struck 10 fours and one six. He added 166 for the third wicket with Brathwaite.
Brathwaite and Carter continued the grind, and Pride reached 336 for three at lunch before they carried the hosts 351 for three after the interval to ensure they claimed four batting bonus points.
They put on 142 for the fourth wicket before Carter was lbw to Harty, essaying a sweep, one over after Blackwood dropped him at slip off the same bowler.
Brathwaite and Dowrich carried Pride to 443 for four at tea, and they increased the tempo in an effort to hasten the declaration, but they were among the four wickets the home team lost in an hour’s batting after tea.
