Boyce: Small rise in major crime

There has been a “negligible” increase in major crimes in Barbados when the data at June 25 is compared with corresponding crime figures for last year.

This is the assessment of Commissioner of Police Richard Boyce.

In a pre-recorded interview carried on the CBC’s One on One Sunday night Commissioner Boyce lauded Barbadians for coming forward with tips using the Crime Stoppers programme. Crime Stoppers provides a telephone number (18008477) for people to report suspected criminal activities.

Boyce said at June 25 this year 13 murders were recorded compared with 11 murders for last year. There were 46 robberies this year compared with 42 last year, 26 rapes this year compared with 30 last year and 30 aggravated burglaries at June 25 this year compared with 33 for the corresponding period of 2021.

Overall, major crimes were up by nine or two per cent at June 25 this year, which the Commissioner of Police described as negligible. (HH)
