Amidst fluctuating wind and varying atmospheric conditions, the Barbados Defence Force’s Drone Unit conducted crucial flights near the National Emergency Operations Centre.
Captain Donovan Smith, officer in charge of the Unit, gave an update on their role in the disaster assessment, part of the national response to provide accurate information in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.
“Our initial flights indicated minimal damage despite some rain and high winds,” Captain Smith remarked. “However, full assessment remains challenging due to high gusts along the south coast and northern areas of the island.”
The BDF Drone Unit currently has five drones on standby, with plans to deploy and two more, as conditions permit.
“Our next step is a comprehensive assessment once weather conditions stabilise,” Captain Smith explained. “We are working closely with joint agency teams to strategise on bolstering BDF assets and fostering seamless cooperation.”
