Defending champions Barbados were victorious again in this year’s CG Insurance Women’s Super50 Cup when they completed a nine wicket win over Guyana at Conaree Sports Club in Basseterre, St Kitts & Nevis.
Guyana batted first and limped to 121 runs, 24 of which were extras, in 34.3 overs. Sheneta Grimmond top scored for the Guyanese with 24 runs. In reply, Barbados chased down the total at a canter, finishing 122-1 inside 17 overs.
Guyana’s poor campaign with the bat continued as they followed up their miserly score of 79 in the opening game with their total of 121 runs all out. Up against a bowling attack that featured the likes of Shamalia Connell and Hayley Matthews, Guyana never threatened to post a substantial score despite cameos from Sheneta Grimmond and Shermaine Campbelle. Connell was particularly impressive finishing with figures of 2-21 in eight overs.
Captain Hayley Matthews got her campaign up and running after a quiet start with a stroke filled 72*. Her knock, which included eight boundaries and four sixes, was well supported by opening partner Kycia Knight who scored 40 runs. A misfield allowed her sister, Kyshona, to finish off proceedings with 197 balls to spare with a single into the offside.
Barbados will be looking to win three games on the bounce when they face Jamaica next on Friday May 12th. Guyana will be looking to secure their first victory of the campaign when they play the Leeward Islands.
